Illinois defines physicians, nurses, healthcare workers, and healthcare employers by statute.
Physician: “means a person licensed under the Medical Practice Act to practice medicine in all of its branches or a chiropractic physician.” (Medical Practice Act- 225 ILCS 60/2).
Nurse: means a person who is licensed as a professional nurse under this Act and practices nursing as defined in this Act. (Nurse Practice Act-225 ILCS 65/50-10).
Healthcare Worker: Any licensed or unlicensed employee working in direct care or access to patients for a Healthcare Employer. (Healthcare Background Check Act-225 ILCS 46/15).
Healthcare Employer: A hospital, nursing home, long term care facility, assisted & shared living facility, hospice program, home healthcare agency-basically any employer that provides healthcare services.
